SCARLET NUN, errr KNIGHT PV
Officially up in GyaO! this morning but not for us outside Japan .__. But anyway someone nice uploaded it.
Jeebus NUNS EVERYWHERE!!! The number of nuns involved in this video is beyond me. xD Nana/nun, violinist/nuns, and countless praying nuns.. uuuuum nothing else to say ^^;;
Pretty good medieval props but could have been utilized better? None of them barely did anything -_-; and I’m a bit disappointed there’s no “real” knight cosplay… D:
Update.
Thanks to Nina in comments, I get it now. I was too distracted by the number of nuns (lol nun fetish) and forgot that the whole idea relates to Joan of Arc. Fits the lyrics and PV very much.
Joan was a pious maiden listening to the voice of God (not exactly nun but close enough) to go to war, explaining the nun to knight switch. The lyrics suggest that she’s speaking to some divine/surreal being “up there” (the bright light from sky in PV), and that made her stronger to protect and believe what’s important to her (take up a sword).
SCARLET KNIGHT has 3 tie-ups as of now, so while this was originally made for DOG DAYS, the only connection is the war/knight theme. Joan of Arc’s story fits more.

should’ve been White Nun – Scarlet Knight
lol, those are nuns for Nanaism, don’t complain xD
I thought the PV is supposed to have a story… But i don’t get it!!
*Or maybe I’m just too dense…*
I love the ending scene where her sword became totally shiny~~
i also thought that there was supposed to be a story… from what i see in the last scene, the knight nana is like willing to do anything and the nun nana is willing to accept everything? o0 needs translation of the song’s lyrics…
a very holy PV XD lol….love both side even sister Nana hehe!!
the part where all the sisters look up…that my favorite part! <3
light shining on Nana!! *spotlight!*
Another religious PV. I wish red Nana could do something during the PV like white nun Nana, not just stand and sing.
And in the end she actually did cosply knight. That was um… Nana style knight cosplay XD lol
It’s a good PV but it could even more awesome if there could be an actual story (or two Nanas could meet like two Minoris met in Precious one PV, loved that moment)
Good god that’s a LOT of nuns @_@
why nuns and not knights??? D8
ah well, cant complain >>.
Really great setting though, very dramatic…and short haired nana is smokin’ hahaha.
thanks for sharing the pv!
ah, SCARLET KNIGHT’S PV! actually was expecting more impact from the first line, “michiibite boku wo angel light” (according to your translations) , will be so much better with more impact!
think this PV is generally good,(can’t remember which concert… nana wore some nun costume with a failed hairstyle…) but definitely there are parts to improve… i just think that it has a lack of impact for such a epic song! D: but it gets better at the end, Nana-chan with the sword. -drools-
Nanaism nuns.. I’d like to be a bishop someday LOL
it’s Knight in shining sword, not armor anymore xD
nana’s nun costume somehow reminds of the one she wore on Brilliant Star
btw I love her scarlet dress..:D and the swordddd!!!
Too much nuns, are they prayin’ for Nana to be canonized, as we all do? So, if Nana gets to be a saint, will Jan 21st become our holly day?
And about the song… sounds a little disco to me… I don’t know… I expected a little more form this PV.
Though it probably could have been executed a lot more creatively, I honestly wasn’t realistically expecting the video for this song to be much different from how it is. In any event, I actually genuinely and thoroughly enjoyed it… one of the most classy and sophisticated Mizuki Nana videos I’ve ever seen as far as the concept and background goes. I always enjoy seeing when deep, poignant, and profound symbolism is incorporated into her videos (such as what she and/or the vid directors did with the videos for ETERNAL BLAZE, Mugen, and Brilliant Star)… seeing Nana dressed like a nun seemed, to me, to be a metaphor for a prophet equipped with knowledge of self destined to combat ignorance, hatred, jealousy, and envy with the power of holiness. The first half of the video seemed to represent Nana’s soul being trapped inside in a tabernacle, with the second half symbolizing triumph over the chains and shackles to tackle life head-on, no holds barred.
It’s really amazing to listen to songs like this, as well as POP MASTER and UNBREAKABLE, and think about how Nana still sounds just as good musically and vocally as she did the first time I ever heard her (on ETERNAL BLAZE)… most singers who manage to last as long as Nana has usually end up starting to seriously fall off at this point in their career, but Nana is still relevant and coming out with consistently good releases. She just keeps getting better, while “artists” like Bieber and Gaga get worse. If J-pop were a game, then it could be said that Nana has risen to the top to become one of its premier sportswomen. She started off as an underdog with a lot of potential and a lot of burdens to overcome, then climbed the ranks to gain recognition as a top-of-the-line player, and eventually became one of the most knowledgeable coaches of the game. A true scientist and a godly architect of J-pop… potent, powerful, spiritual, mental, emotional, physical, lyrical, unbeatable, miraculous, and inimitable.
Of course no one on here does so, but, for anyone who’s out of their mind enough to talk down on Nana, I have four choice words for them: DON’T HARASS THE GOD.
Looking back at the promo pic for Scarlet Knight (jacket?), it could be that the PV relates, loosely, the story of Joan of Arc : pious maiden (not a nun originally but in this case it carries the idea well enough) listening to the voice of God, dictating her go to war. Thus Nana switching from nun-mode to knight-mode.
There is certainly another level or reading for this PV, but will wait for Dog Days to dive deeper into it.
I also regret she didn’t wear an armor but that gauntlet reminded me a bit of Fate’s one, so not too bad.
This PV proves that Nana Mizuki looks great in everything she wears! However I do think that a “Knightly” theme would have suit the PV much better as opposed to well…..Nuns…. But overall Nana Mizuki’s pose and her dress looks awesome at the ending!
I totally felt in love with the PV. And Nana chan looks so innocent and pure. I urge there is a need for a big Nana chan nun poster. To be honest I was trying to figure out Scarlet Knight pv story but each time I got distracted by Nana chan herself … Shame on me.
I do wonder after watching so many Nana chan pv’s … Has she ever thought of acting? Like a minor role in a movie or something.
Thanks for sharing, Danie~
Updated my post.
@Nina: Spoken like a true French! How could I forget Joan of Arc’s story lol shows how long ago high school was .__.;; Thanks darl I will have a serious talk with my mom if she found out. xD
Hmm, seiyuu is voice acting, but real acting is a whole different world, more on facial expression and body language than voice. I don’t think any of her PV shows such talent ^^; and if she’s interested she’d have tried it.
@perceefinesse: Nana doesn’t need you to bash Bieber and Gaga to make her sound better. Personally I refrain from comparing artists to make the other look better because it’s pointless. You don’t need to bring someone down to lift the other.
me have 1 qn…y this song is having 1 OP for an anime n 2 EN for other program ?_? and is only 1 song been use for 3 program!! X_X”
Of course she doesn’t. I could have just said “She just keeps getting better, while others get worse.” I definitely intend to keep comments of that nature neutral from now on… there’s no need to call out names. After all, Nana’s not the kind of person to do so… she’s the epitome of cool, calm, collected, and humble… she’d rather let her music and record sales speak for themselves.
Ah, after your update, I think I get the story now. I THINK….
Thx =D
And Scarlet Knight have 3 tie-ups??
I only know about it being Dog Days’ OP…. =/
Thanks Danie for sharing this video.
Well this is probably not my favorite PV from Nana. They should’ve done for Nana more better than this.
I prefer Mugen PV than this (^_^”)y *my two cents opinion only*
@VMeGaMRedZV: Honestly, I’m not inclined to disagree with you.
To this day, I will never understand why a lot of people disliked the Mugen PV or felt that it was weird… other than the Shin’ai PV, I thought that it showcased Nana at her most elegant (I especially enjoyed the parts where she danced… the whole video was brain-bendingly romantic, but those bits were ESPECIALLY amorous).
@perceefinesse and VMeGaMRedZV:
I love Mugen a lot too, both the song and the PV. ^.^ *High five!*
And like perceefinesse I can’t understand why people disliked it… Different people different tastes? =P
@WHLT: I guess people disliked Mugen because it wasn’t as cute or as hardcore as most of Nana’s songs tend to be… it was more of a grown, “dress up nice, put your shoes on” type of song… the kind of song that a young, smooth adolescent trying to get the ladies would listen to.
I don’t know if you’d agree with me or not, but I think that, other than the Mysterion PV, the PV for Mugen was probably the most erotic one that Nana ever did… none of Nana’s PVs have ever been as provocative as, for instance, the average Madonna or Christina Aguilera video, but there seemed to be many… stimulating… elements in those PVs.
Whenever I listen to any of Nana’s songs, I always sit and think to myself, “God really broke the mold when he created her.” I honestly think that she’s the closest thing to a perfect female specimen we will ever know.
Okay, that’s probably FAR from the truth. But she sure is great… hopefully we can all agree on that. 31 years old and still doing her thing… nobody will EVER be able to take her accomplishments away from her.
@perceefinesse: I’m not sure about the erotic part LOL… I don’t really look for such elements. Wait, isn’t Etsuraku Camellia more ero? But I know Nana can be ero if she wants =D
*If one day I start looking for ero elements that day will be the day I turn myself into a lesbian. =3*
I liked Mugen PV because it gave out a rather dark and mysterious vibe, similar to Kalafina’s PVs, and also because it fits rather well with the feel of the song. I like Kalafina a lot too by the way.
And yes, Nana is amazing =D
@WLHT: I honestly don’t know how to explain it. I tend to find a lot of things erotic that most people commonly wouldn’t. I guess what turned me on are the outfits that Nana was wearing (the fur suit and the gothic dress), as well as her romantic facial expressions while she was singing and the way that she gyrated at certain moments… it just gave me these weird (but good) feelings in the pit of my stomach. It’s weird… Nana comes off as romantic 24/7, even when she isn’t trying to be. I don’t know why, but I didn’t find Etsuraku Camellia (the video and the song) as erotic as Mugen… I mean, they’re both erotic, but I found Mugen to be more romantic… I guess this is where our tastes diverge. Well, at least they converge when it comes to liking Nana.
It’s not like I spend every waking moment watching a Mizuki Nana video searching for even the most REMOTELY erotic elements… I just tend to subconsciously pick up on some things. Thank you for recommending Kalafina… I just looked her up, and I definitely like her style, without question.
And I apologize for mixing up the letters in your name in my previous comment.
*their style
Sorry about the double comment–I forgot that Kalafina was a collective group, rather than one performer. I won’t do it again.
@perceefinesse: It’s okay, I totally didn’t realise you messed up the name =D I mess it up before too so no worries =D
Well, all right, then. Thank you for your understanding.
Are there any other J-pop singers or groups you enjoy, apart from Mizuki Nana and Kalafina? I mean, I’m sure that you’ve probably answered this question before, but I hope you wouldn’t mind answering it again if you have, because you seem to have good tastes.
Well, besides Mizuki Nana and Kalafina, I listen to songs that are nice without really noticing the singers. As in, when I watch some animes and I really like the OP/ED, I will listen to it.
But if I really have to recommend I would recommend music by Kajiura Yuki. She does all the composition, lyrics and arrangement for her music. She is also the person behind Kalafina and FictionJunction.
And if you really like Mizuki Nana perhaps you can try her younger sister’s songs. They’re not bad too.
Her name is Kondou Mika but she goes by Daisy x Daisy in the industry. =D
I tend to do the same thing myself… but I’ve got a bit of obsessive-compulsive thing going on when it comes to hearing a song or a piece of music that I enjoy. Whenever I hear something that I find to be awesome, captivating, or stimulating, I ALWAYS want to know the names of EVERYONE who played a part in making it possible. It doesn’t go beyond singers/songwriters/artists/performers/emcees/producers/arrangers/composers, though… it’s not like I try to find out who mastered it, or which studio it was recorded in, or who was in charge of the recording session.
I definitely love Kajiura Yuki’s music… she seems to to be one of the greatest masters of smooth, cool, calm, collected, and powerful melodies and rhythms ever to have hit the scene. She seems to be a wizard on the piano, too. Her music is PERFECT for those moments where you want to relax in a quiet, laid-back atmosphere, or when you feel drive, motivation, and inspiration to conquer a challenging task at hand, or triumph over a major-league roadblock and obstacle in your life. She seems to bring a serious video game vibe to a lot of her compositions (which I guess makes sense, since she has composed for a few games). And she definitely has a good taste in vocalists… Nanri Yuuka is arguably the best one she ever worked with, but the others are equally nice. It seems like her vocalists are always at their musical and vocal best when they’re working with Kajiura compared to their solo works… it’d be interesting to hear how Nana would sound over one of her compositions.
And I definitely enjoy Kondou Mika’s voice… at least she decided to keep her birth last name. I guess Nana changed her last name to Mizuki in order to avoid being confused with or mistaken for the 1990′s J-pop idol Kondou Nana (exact same last name, VERY different vocal cadence and presence [sounded very Chihara Minori-esque], looked somewhat like Ogata Megumi back when she was prominent… YouTube user MabaitAngSombrero has uploaded most of her old PVs). I guess the elder Nana would have had a bit of a problem back in the days with a young whippersnapper singing under the same last name (Kondo is 7 years Mizuki’s senior). I definitely enjoy Mika’s voice… it sounds like a cross between Mizuki Nana and Hirano Aya’s voices (it’s very polished, but very rock-and-roll ready simultaneously).
It’s just too bad that Mika may never end up achieving even a fraction of the popularity that Nana has earned during the course of her career… hopefully she and Nana will come together one of these days to do a duet, or perform on the same stage, or collaborate on a combination album (I can see it now… “NANA X MIKA: LEGENDARY STATUS…” it would go million in a heartbeat).
I don’t know if you’d agree, but something that I’d really like to see is Nana judging a singing battle/competition (one with a VS. setup where two singers are onstage simultaneously, going up against each other in two rounds with one minute apiece for each singer in each round)… considering how rigorously Nana was trained in the days of her youth, it’d be interesting to see just how harshly she’d judge the contestants. ~:-)
Ah, no wonder Nana changed her name…. I will go look up on the older Nana =D
I also hope one day Nana and Mika would perform together. A sisters duet would definitely be interesting. Really looking forward to that. =D
guys, you’re completely out of topic.
If you want to discuss those subjects, do it in forum, chat, or e-mail.
@danie: sorry i ranted in your blog, just can’t stand this anymore
@Etherlite: I really don’t see how we’re “out of topic” (I believe the correct terminology is “off-topic”)… we’re discussing Mizuki Nana.
Now, if I were making hip-hop comparison comments, then I would REALLY be going off-topic. But I wasn’t. Danie e-mailed me privately and asked me to hold back on comments like those, and said that talking about seiyuus, Anison singers, or even mainstream J-pop artists would be a much better alternative. And, if you check the earlier comments of this post, you’ll see that that is EXACTLY what I did. I didn’t talk about anything that anyone on this site isn’t even remotely familiar with or interested in (save for Bieber and Gaga, but I was only using them as examples while making an argument). There’s no need for anyone to be narrow-minded enough with a particular topic that they only talk about a limited amount of subject matter within the comments section of that topic, when it could be expanded upon with greater amounts of depth and information. If Danie thought that I was starting to make irrelevant comments on this post, I’m pretty sure that she would have said something to me already.
And I already said my piece earlier on this video… what else could I say that I or someone else hasn’t already said? ~:-( There’s only so much that people can say about something before they exhaust all of the possibilities for original discussion.
Additionally, how could I talk with WLHT about these subjects via e-mail? I don’t even know her (his?) e-mail address! *_* I don’t use MSN Messenger, and I don’t frequent ANY forums any more (I used to when I was younger, but not nowadays).
If anyone wants to talk to me about anything, my YouTube account is BLRD2MugenAndHipHop… PM me there if you don’t think that something you want to talk to me about here would be relevant to the topic.
I apologize for having struck nerves with my comments.
I was just out for a weekend and.. *facepalms*
First of all, perceefinesse, someone will get offended if you accuse them of being “narrow-minded”. I’m not tolerating a fight here.
Etherlite is right that this is a “Scarlet Knight PV” post, making Kalafina or Kondo Nana (I swear I saw Madonna) *technically* out of topic.
Otoh yes it’s free to talk about Nana here, though keep in mind that (hopefully) there are other readers, and post something they might want to read too in a reasonable length.
Just to correct something,
-Kondo Nana (Jpop) and Kondo Nana (ours) have different kanji. Jpop Nana stopped her professional singer activity before Mizuki debuted so don’t accuse Jpop-Nana to have a problem with the name.. it’s from our Nana’s side.
-Mika doesn’t keep “Kondo” either. She goes with Daisy x Daisy’s MIKA, or even Hinagiku (with Oukoku Band).
@Danie – something I’ve been wondering for a while…why is it that both of them dropped their original last names? Is Kondo(u) a bad surname to have in Japan? Doesn’t work well in the entertainment industry? Negative luck/karma/feng shui? Been too lazy to look it up, orz. So I’ll leave it to you sensei~
For Nana, it was Jpop Kondo Nana.
For Mika since she started as a band and it’s common for Japanese band members to just use their first name (in all-caps lol) tho I haven’t searched if there’s a deeper meaning besides shortening her introduction MC lol.
I kinda agree that “Kondo” sounds like a countryside name.. and surname more commonly used so it’s important. Nana calls herself “Mizuki” too, only fans/friends call her “Nana(chan/san/sama)”.
@danie~: Well, I wasn’t accusing anyone in particular, or on this site in general, of being narrow-minded. I was making a general argument about how adhering too strictly in discussions pertaining to topics at hand can prevent possibilities for expansion and development. I’m not here to pick fights, but it’s not like I’m going to sit around and do nothing when someone says something that gets me steamed, because it makes me look like I can’t defend myself.
I’m normally not the kind of person to point fingers, but, for the record, WLHT was the first person to mention Kalafina. I am guilty of mentioning the other performers, though… and not discussing them in a proactive way pertaining to the main topic. I did try my best not to mention things related to hip-hop, though.
I should be making my comments more meaningful and accessible, so I’m going to try to do just that from now on.
And I had no idea that the kanji was different for both Nanas’ Kondos, or that Mika sometimes uses different versions of her name (I unfortunately didn’t do the proper homework/research where that was concerned -_-). And it says on J-pop Nana’s Japanese Wikipedia page that her last single was released in 1999 (Mizuki Nana’s debut was in ’98), so there MAY have been issues at one point or another… and, if there were, then they’re meaningless now, since J-pop Nana has been out of the game for over a decade, and our Nana has pretty much fully claimed whatever throne she had.
@perceefinesse: It’s the right blog to talk about Nana & jpop, it’s just the wrong thread to do so, wait, it’s not a thread, it’s a blog post, and this is just comment section, not a forum. Even a forum has their own specific threads, they do have ‘general discussion’ area tho
You can’t talk to WLHT anywhere else cause you don’t know his/her contacts? then ask for his/her contacts/give your contacts, like you did just before, no need to whine
You don’t point fingers, it’s ok, I said “you guys”, it means both of you
Not mentioning anything else, your posts are way tl;dr with minimum value
@danie: again, sorry for ranting here. I’m done with him
Wah… Okok,
First, I first mentioned Kalafina when I compared Nana’s vids to Kalafina’s so I thought I didn’t side track that much. Sorry If mentioning other singers here is a no no.
Second, I don’t ignore people’s question (unless they irritate me a lot) so I just replied. And sorry again if I offended anyone with my replies.
Finally, perceefinesse, you can email me here:
lua_hui_ting@hotmail.com
I have twitter but I don’t use it so forget it.
And to Danie, I’m really really sorry I posted so many irrelevant things here.
That’s it, I’m not commenting on this post anymore.
@Etherlite: It’s okay… Danie already recommended an English Nana forum to me, so you no longer have to worry about me dragging irrelevant subject matter into topics like these.
@WLHT: I don’t use Twitter either.
This is the last comment I’m going to make on this post. I figure that I might as well walk out of this mess with whatever shred of dignity and aplomb I have left (if I ever had any).
